Chapter 22

The Pain in Us All

The once lavish beds seemed a little less comfortable after the dinner with Malum. Malik had not been such a fool to think the reunion with Abrie would be peaceful, but he had never dreamed it would be anything like it had been.

Seeing his old mentor had shot a lightning bolt of pain and anger through him. Every ounce of his body wanted to run forward and shake the man, squeeze him, and at the same time he was thankful to see he still lived. Such warring emotions were a lot to handle. How could a man who had done so much for him, taken care of him, taught him everything he knew, and protected him, also be the man who killed his parents? It made no sense. No matter how long he thought on it, the numbers did not add up. The longer he spent trying to deduce the problem, the more the problem seemed impossible.

Malik closed his eyes and tried to blank his mind. There was a technique with the arrow he used that made his mind clear. It allowed him to think of nothing but the target and the wood in his hand. It did not work here. He could still hear the others talking amongst themselves. Could still hear the ball bouncing along the stone floor as Mollie threw it repeatedly for Egg, who never seemed to grow bored of the chase.

Opening his eyes, he looked to Mollie. Her head was down, eyes on the ground, and her legs crossed under her bottom. Everything about her said sorrow, pain, and exhaustion, but Malik found her to be the most beautiful sight his eyes could ask for. Without her, he would have nothing left in this world. Letting his mind slip from thoughts of Abrie, he thought of their shared moment in the hall. A passionate few minutes filled with nothing but them. The world had fallen away, the problems had faded, and everything promised to be okay. Then Darris had stormed out of the dining hall and stumbled upon them.

Without saying a word, he caused Mollie to step a few steps away and completely forget Malik existed. Maybe that was not the case, but it felt like it. Her eyes roamed over Darris and his did the same to her. There was no blaming Mollie. Darris was a handsome man who knew how to wield a sword and fight. It was hard not to be enamored by his presence. Darris had walked away without saying anything. The rest of the party had filed through the hallway as well. That was when Mollie had grabbed him by the hand pulling him up the staircase toward their rooms. At the top of the stairs they had met Khris and Embre. Before they could speak on what had occurred in the room to make everyone rush out in a fit, Mollie pulled them along. The guards had not yet returned to their post when they arrived at the rooms.
